Strong repairs for damaged teeth

Inlays and onlays are used to restore areas of decay or damage that are too significant or difficult to repair with a normal filling. They are more durable than fillings, and can offer a less invasive and potentially more affordable alternative to a crown.

Made from hard wearing materials, such as porcelain, composite resin or gold, inlays and onlays are created outside the mouth before being fitted to your tooth. They are usually placed on the chewing surfaces of teeth at the back of the mouth, but can be used to repair areas on the front teeth too.

An inlay is cemented within the cavity, whilst an onlay covers more of the tooth, extending over the edges. Both are custom-made to fit your individual case, and provide very stable restorations.

What happens during treatment?

At your initial appointment, we will thoroughly clean your tooth, removing any areas of decay or old fillings. We will take impressions to ensure that the inlay or onlay will perfectly fit into or onto your tooth. A temporary restoration will be fitted to you prepared tooth, to ensure it remains protected whilst your inlay or onlay is being created.

When your inlay or onlay is ready, we will check it fits correctly and feels comfortable in your mouth before fixing it into place using a strong dental adhesive.
